Sedation Dentistry
Oral Conscious Sedation dentistry is an amazing yet simple technique that allows patients to snooze through their entire appointment. Sedation dentistry helps patients feel relaxed and stress free, since it significantly decreases the body's inclination to tense the muscles when under stress. Sedation dentistry techniques may or may not require an IV, and in most cases you simply take a little blue pill, relax and will probably not even remember coming into our office. There are no after effects of the medicine and oral conscious sedation dentistry does not cause the possible side effects of general anesthesia. Sedation dentistry is a perfect solution for patients who exhibit anxiety or dental phobias during appointments or have difficulty controlling movements during dental procedures. Some forms of sedation simply alleviate anxiety or put patients in a sleep-like state, so that little is felt or remembered from the dentistry procedure. At Apple Dental Center, serving Apple Valley, Victorville, Hesperia, Barstow and Big Bear, in Southern California, we provide sedation dentistry options to ease the fears of anxious patients so that they can receive the treatment they need to keep their smile healthy and beautiful.
Sedation Dentistry Information
There are several types and degrees of dental sedation; the sedation dentistry technique recommended by Dr. Mazi will be based upon the treatment being performed and/or the level of your dental anxiety, and your medical history. During your initial consultation Dr. Mazi will be able to determine what dental sedation method will be the best for your dental procedure, moderate sedation with oral sedatives and/or IV lines or nitrous oxide.

IV Sedation
IV Sedation, which is also called "Intravenous Conscious Sedation", is a state-of-the-art technique that is used for those that are highly fearful about going to the dentist. This type of sedation isn't used in most dental offices since it requires one to have advanced training and a certificate, which Dr. Mazi has. IV sedation has many benefits that oral and inhalation sedation doesn't have.
IV sedation is a type of sedation method used to relieve those of anxiety and fear when they enter a dentist office for a procedure. You remain conscious throughout the sedation. IV sedation produces partial or even full memory loss which will make the time appear to pass by very quickly. You won't be able to recall much of what went on during the procedure. Anti-anxiety drugs are used during this sedation. IV sedation will not prevent pain so a local anesthetic might be still necessary. Some dentists may add in a strong pain-killer to prevent pain during the procedure.
IV sedation or Intravenous Conscious Sedation means that the drugs will be delivered through your veins. If you have a fear of needles, inhalation sedation will be given first to put you at ease while the needle is inserted into hand or arm. Your pulse and oxygen levels will be monitored throughout by a "pulse oximeter." Your blood pressure will also be monitored. Some doctors, in order to prevent pain, will administer pain-killers through the vein along with the anti-anxiety medication. The doctor will also monitor your sedation levels and will adjust according on your needs.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Feeling apprehensive or even outright scared of receiving dental care is nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, it is a common fear: Millions of people experience anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist, including many of our patients from the Apple Valley, Victorville, Hesperia, Barstow and Big Bear areas of California. Sedation dentistry is changing these patients' experiences in the dentist's chair, since it allows them to feel completely at ease during treatment. This allows people who have avoided seeking necessary dental care to receive the treatment they need, without undue fear or discomfort, often leaving our office with little memory of their dental procedure, and quickly return to work or school as usual. Just imagine taking a small pill before your dental appointment, relaxing away the afternoon, and then realizing that your dental treatment is finished!
Nitrous Oxide Treatment
Apple Dental Center also provides nitrous oxide treatment as an alternative to oral sedation. For our patients from Apple Valley, Victorville, Hesperia, Barstow and Big Bear California areas who do not want full sedation dentistry, but still want something to help them relax, nitrous oxide treatment is often an excellent choice. The nitrous gas acts quickly, and helps to take the edge off a patient's anxiety. Many patients who undergo nitrous treatment fall asleep during treatment.
Dr. Mazi is an active member of D.O.C.S., the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation , and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
